Arden No1 Oppenheimer Mill at Arden Accession No 99-490-R Text Taken about 1890(?) W. The quarter sec of land over which mill was built first once in 1859 by B. F. Yantis of Olympia, assisted by Michaele LaFleur. Sampson Oppenheimer and his brother bought the mill in 1868 from D. H. Ferguson who bought the mill from O. Haag, a Canadian, who had bought the mill from Yantis in 1861. Sampson Oppenheimer filed a homestead on the NW 1/4 Sec 11 Twp 34 R39E on April 15 1870 and Sept 5, 1972. This was the first living on government land in Stevens County, which then extended over a vast area. I owned this acres for many years and removed mill building in 1918. The lumber was used in constructing a barn on the farm. Patrick J.
