Original Description

Accession #1965-300.0581. The Double Eagle Mine. Formerly known as the Silverine, is located some 13 miles west of Valley. It was discovered in 1907 by three prospectors named Kaiser, Lutjen, and Kindorf. Considerable ore was removed from the prospect tunnel, driven in my hand, some 150 feet below the outcrop. Later a second tunner some 75 feet below the upper tunnel, was opened up and about that time Kindorf took sick and died. A year later Kaiser was killed by a fall of earth in the mine. Since then the mine lay idle until 1915 when the Double Eagle Company was organized and bought out the entire Silverine group. Note the hand-tinting in the photograph with silver and white added.
